The Shepherd's Overflowing Anointing

"You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows". Psalms 23: 5b

Sheep are always bothered by flies, bugs, and other pests. If the shepherd is not sensitive to these small creatures, they will make their home on the sheep's head. Even though the flies and bugs are small, they can cause irritation and bring about a huge impact on sheep's health.

But the careful shepherd is so detailed even in the minor affairs of their sheep. The shepherd anoints the heads of sheep with oil to bring comfort. Oil is really hated by flies, bugs, and pests; so, this oil will keep the irritating small creatures from making their home on the sheep's head. Besides that, the oil can heal the open wounds and scabs from previous injury or previous damage caused by the pests. The anointing of the oil by the shepherd always brings great release, comfort, and healing to the sheep.

Let's see how this verse works in our lives, "You anoint my head with oil". In the Bible the oil symbolizes the Holy Spirit. In our daily walk with the Lord, we are often distracted by many things. The contamination of the world and sin always come through our minds and weaken us. Not only that, our past hurts and mistakes will keep us unhealthy mentally and spiritually. But we have someone that overcame the world, sin, and death; our gracious Shepherd God anoints us with His Holy Spirit to set us free from all kinds of irritation and wounds. His anointing will bring peace of mind, produce joy, gentleness, peace, contentment, love, healing, and godliness. His anointing can bring relief upon our past wounds, hurting and mistakes; our Shepherd God knows every attempt of the enemy to remind us of our past, to pull us down.

My friend, even though you can still see the old scars, you won't feel the pain because the anointing of God's Holy Spirit has set you free to excel in this life. Now see carefully, the overflowing, "my cup overflows" always comes in after the anointing. His anointing will enable us to experience the overflowing and the abundance in our lives. An overflowing joy in our walk, in Him, an overflowing healing from our wounds and past hurt; an overflowing spiritual life, and in ministry, an overflowing peace and love in our relationship with our loved ones, and of course an overflowing of God's supplies and provision. When we talk about overflowing, we always limit God to material and monetary terms only, but His overflowing power and loving-kindness is more than just that. "My cup overflows" because of the Shepherd's care and provision.

Dearest, at God's table, there is no lack of provision. There is fullness even to access His table because of His grace in our lives, and we are supplied more than we will ever need in every area of our lives. Receive His anointing of the Holy Spirit and experience the overflowing.
